Caltrans gives update on when Highway 1 could reopen
MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV)- Caltrans said that weekend storms contributed to a slip-out near Rocky Creek Bridge that has caused Highway 1 to close at Palo Colorado Road.
Kevin Drabinski who is the public relations officer for Caltrans said that wet weather played a role in the road crumbling into the Pacific Ocean.
"The ground was saturated with this season's rains and that contributed to the slip out of the roadway," Drabinski said.
Drabinski said it is all hands on deck to repair the road.
"This weekend we'll likely place 500 feet of concrete barriers down the center line that'll give the convoys to channel through when they pass and it also provides protection for our workers," Drabinski said. "Who are trying to add stability to the edge of the roadway."
Crews will be placing concrete barriers down the center line of the road.
"That'll give the convoys to channel through when they pass and it also provides protection for our workers who are trying to add stability to the edge of the roadway," Drabinski said.
California State Assemblywoman Dawn Addis sent a statement to KION regarding the road closure.
"Our changing climate has exacerbated the danger that coastal communities’ face. Since receiving reports of the Rocky Creek slide from concerned residents on Saturday, my team and I have been tirelessly dedicated to addressing the situation."
