High-altitude balloon test vehicle crashes east of Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Officials with Tucson-based World View Enterprises say their unmanned stratospheric balloon made an unplanned landing Wednesday but did not crash. Company officials say the balloon had been deployed as part of their continued test program for a remote sensing system and it landed in a field where they directed it to land. Several Tucson media outlets reported Wednesday that the balloon had crashed in the Rincon Mountains east of Tucson. World View has been flying unmanned stratospheric balloon missions from its Tucson site and other sites for research and commercial customers since 2014, logging more than 100 missions so far. Hartman said Wednesday’s balloon test flight was not related to company’s space tourism project.
