Luna y Sol Familia Center helping underserved communities with affordable prom suits, dresses

PAJARO, Calif. (KION-TV) -- As the school year winds down, many high schoolers are getting ready for prom. Some underserved communities are having a hard time doing so, however, including those impacted by flooding in Pajaro in March 2023.

"There's a lot of people who still need help," said Johara Ayala with Luna y Sol Familia Center.

Ayala said as of Friday afternoon the agency helped 200 people, but the agency expects to be busy on Saturday.

Close to 500 people are expected to visit the site for prom dresses, suits and shoes.

Last year the agency gave out more than a thousand pieces of clothing to people in need.

High school student Jazmin Hernandez was able to pick out two dresses on Friday and said she isn't shy about asking for help finding affordable dresses.

"People are going to talk no matter what but you're in high school once," said Hernandez. "But who cares what people say. Do what makes you happy. If you find a dress you find a dress."

Staff with Luna y Sol said they're also helping people on-site with hair and makeup tutorials.
