Austin Castro

WATSONVILLE, Calif. (KION-TV)- The Watsonville City Council approved the clean up of a homeless encampment that officials have deemed a public nuisance.

Officials are looking into plans to abate the site which sits off of Airport Boulevard.

About 20 to 40 homeless encampments are currently in that area.

Suzi Marriam who is the community development director for the City of Watsonville says there are multiple local organizations ready to provide outreach and assistance.

"They'll talk with the people to try and get them entered into the health care management system," Marriam said. "Then try to see if there's ways to navigate to get them either into any shelter environment."

Marriam adds once that step has been completed they will move forward with removing people and items from the encampment.
