SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION-TV)- UPDATE ON APRIL 30, 2024 AT 6:42 PM- A rail trail controversy appears to be in the rear view mirror.

The Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors approved 4-0 to approve funding for segments 10 and 11 of the Coastal Rail Trail project.

Supervisor Zach Friend recused himself from the vote since he lives near the segments 10 to 11 which stretches out from Live Oak to Aptos.

The grant is $68 million and a County spokesperson said they will file for an extension to use the grant which is 20 months.

During the meeting, the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission said that Roaring Camp has expressed interest to complete the track relocation work at their expense. Commission staff said they are in talks to enter an agreement with them.

County staff will start looking at other ways to potentially reduce costs within the project estimates.

Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors reject plans Coastal Rail Trail segments

Parts of a future transportation project in Santa Cruz County are in limbo.

The Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors did not approve plans for two segments on the Coastal Rail Trail. The 4.5 mile stretch of the Rail Trail Project would have gone through Eastside Santa Cruz and mid-Santa Cruz County.

The board was split down the middle 2-2 on staff's recommendation to approve the next step which would be between 17th Avenue in Live Oak and State Park Drive in Aptos.

Some of the supervisors based their decision on environmental concerns and project costs.
