Wife of Sieber Street homicide victim “living a nightmare” after husband killed in Salinas

SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV) -- A Salinas family is mourning the loss of a father and husband after a deadly shooting on Sieber Street in Salinas.

The wife of Roman Angel Basurto said he leaves behind their two children with a third one on the way.

"He loved to sing, that's why he would always go outside." said Victoria Juarez, the wife of Basurto.

Juarez was in tears on Friday, remembering her husband.

Juarez said on Wednesday she was making dinner and Basurto was in the parking lot of the apartment complex where they lived. He was listening to music next to his car.

Juarez said her oldest son was playing outside and that's where he found his Basurto on the ground.

"I moved him, he didn't answer me and then I saw the blood and I grabbed his hand and I said 'Roman, wake up, what happened to you?' he didn't talk to me, all I heard was a sound in his throat." said Juarez.

The medical staff on scene tried saving Basurto's life, but he didn't survive.

"I couldn't believe it," said Juarez. "I still can't believe it right now."

Juarez said Basurto was an amazing father to their children.

"He loved his children, he played with them, he took care of them, he bathed them," said Juarez. "We loved each other too, he loved me."

Juarez said they are planning his funeral in Watsonville and it will be next week. Juarez said they plan to transport his body to Mexico so other family members can pay their respects.

Salinas police said they still have not arrested a suspect, and is asking anyone with information to please contact the detective in charge of the investigation at 831-758-7162.
