GREENFIELD, Calif. (KION) The Greenfield Fire Department is conducting live-fire training on two abandoned houses Saturday.

Firefighters put their lives at risk every single day but where do they acquire the skills to fight these fires? One of the best ways is through live-fire training.

The Greenfield Fire Department held a live-fire training on Saturday in collaboration with different fire departments in south county and other cities like Salinas and Monterey. For the fire chief of Greenfield, it's an excellent opportunity to gain experience.

"It's another thing to also do training container but to have it at an actual house where the fire behaves the way it would behave in an actual house and you have to maneuver your hose line and operate within a house is a little different than in training facility," says Jim Langborg, Greenfield Fire Chief.

Often times in real emergencies, fire departments work together.

"We want to make sure that when we do have a real emergency that we know them, and that we're acquainted and that we're all working off of the same page and training is the way that we can make that happen," says Langborg.

For Greenfield Mayor Pro Tempore, Angela Untalon, it gives the community a look into where exactly their tax dollars are going.

"Our community sees what's going on, they see the type of training that's being conducted. They see why recently within the past few years have invested so much into our new fire department because not only do they take care of Greenfield, they take care of south county," says Untalon.

The fire department trained on a total of two houses and have no other plans for live-fire house trainings.
