Salinas man sentenced to 16 years in prison for armed robbery at Cricket Wireless
SALINAS, Calif. (KION) A Salinas man will spend 16 years in prison for committing an armed robbery at a Cricket Wireless store.
The Monterey County District Attorney's Office said 29-year-old Jose Angel Nunez walked into the store with two pistols and pointed them at the employees in the store. He then went to the register, pointed the guns at the clerk and demanded that he empty the register. The clerk began emptying it, but when Nunez thought it was going to slowly, he fired a shot into the ceiling.
In total, Nunez took $915 and left the store. The clerk chased Nunez, but Nunez turned around and fired three or four shots into the air when he realized he was being chased. After that, he got into a waiting vehicle and left the area.
After talking to witnesses and reviewing surveillance, an officer recognized Nunez from prior contacts, and the investigation also led them to identify Nunez as the suspect.
He pleaded guilty to robbery with an enhancement for the use of a gun and assault with a gun. Both charges are strikes, so if he is charged with another strike offence, he will face 25 years to life in prison.
