Hollister man in custody after attacking family, stabbing himself
HOLLISTER, Calif. (KION) A Hollister man is in police custody after he attacked several family members with a mallet Saturday, only to begin stabbing himself when officers arrived on scene.
Officers were dispatched to the 100 Block of College Street around 12:45 p.m. They had received a call saying that 60-year-old Fernado Sanchez had attacked several of his family members with a mallet, and that the family members had barricaded themselves in the house as he stalked them with a kitchen knife.
Sanchez reportedly hit a 17-year-old girl in the head with the mallet several times after she tried to stop him from attacking her mother. Sanchez then picked up a knife. Meanwhile, his family was able to barricade themselves inside the house and lock Sanchez outdoors.
Sanchez was in the backyard when officers found him. Upon the officers arrival, Sanchez began to stab himself in the chest and neck. The officers were eventually able to subdue Sanchez with a shotgun that fired non-lethal bullets.
Sanchez was taken to a trauma center and is currently being held for evaluation.
He faces several felony charges for assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence.
