Central Coast residents create group to get face masks to those in need

With the coronavirus spreading, many healthcare workers and first responders are left without precious resources, like a face mask.

A group of Central Coast women have been hard at work and started making the masks to distribute themselves. They have also created a group for anyone willing to help.

The group is called Homemade Medical Masks for Central California

According to the page, it is "intended to connect facilities, healthcare workers and first responders within California to individuals who wish to donate their time, sewing skill-set and/or materials to make homemade / fabric medical masks."

Some have questioned the effectiveness of the homemade masks. The group has responded with, "while these masks are not intended to replace NIOSH approved masks, the CDC has recommended the use of bandanas or homemade masks when there is no alternative. Please be cautioned that the preventive effectiveness of the masks is unknown. Group participants are simply trying to fulfill a need that is exponentially increasing in affected areas."
