MARINA, Calif. (KION) Large and seemingly untouched dunes have defined the coastline near Seaside and Marina for decades, but now, a new project is in the works. The California State Parks Department plans to turn Fort Ord Dunes State Park into the state's newest campground.

"I think it's good to give more folks access to camping along here. There aren't that many places where you can camp along the coast," said nearby resident, Nick McKenzie.

Right now, California State Parks does not allow overnight camping anywhere along the coast in Monterey County.

State park officials said the new campground will include multiple RV, traditional and double family campsites, as well as restrooms, showers, parking and beach access.

"I think that's a great idea," said visitor, James Searles.

"If it's here then I think that'll be cool to see the people that come here and camp out," said nearby resident, Jorrie Jackson.

Many return to this part of the coastline for one specific reason. Visitors said while other oceanfront spots are crowded with development and tourists, Fort Ord Dunes State Park is admired for its simple, natural beauty. "We ride here three times a week because it's free of cars. I believe the area has been slow to be developed for all kinds of administrative reasons," said McKenzie.

Cyclists like McKenzie may or may not have to navigate through more traffic as the campgrounds are built in Fall 2020.

Officials said they plan to maintain the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Scenic Bike Trail that runs through Fort Ord Dunes State Park. The California State Parks Department said separate lanes for bikes and pedestrians will be incorporated when construction starts.

"As long as it's sustainable and good for the environment then they should go for it. As long as people care about the land that they are visiting then go for it. It'll be fun. It'll be a great location for people to camp out at," said Jackson.
