Top San Francisco city official charged in corruption case

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) A top San Francisco official has been charged with public corruption in schemes that include offering a bribe for space at the airport, providing inside information to help a friend get permits for homeless shelters and accepting lavish gifts from a billionaire Chinese developer.

San Francisco Public Works Director Mohammed Nuru appeared in court Tuesday along with Nick Bovis. He owns a popular sports bar and other businesses. Nuru goes by the Twitter handle "MrCleanSF," but critics note that San Francisco streets remain littered with feces, trash and used needles amid a homelessness crisis.

Information on attorneys for the two men was not immediately available.
