MONTEREY, Calif. (KION) Every year, the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula sends babies born in February home with red hats, and the hospital is asking for help making them this year.

The hospital is asking for volunteers to knit or crochet the hats. They must be new and made with red, washable yarn without buttons or attachments. They also need to be small enough for a newborn.

The hats can be turned in at the information desk near the hospital entrance.

The hats are given to the babies during American Heart Month to raise awareness of congenital heart defects and heart disease.
