WATSONVILLE, Calif. (KION) Watsonville police said officers arrested a gang member after he led them on a foot chase on New Year's Day.

Geovanni Lopez, 32, was booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail on charges that include being a felon in possession of a firearm and resisting arrest. He also had two warrants out for his arrest.

Police pulled a car over in the 100 block of Elm Street. Lopez was in the back seat, and officers said he ran out of the car and toward the police department when it was stopped. An officer stopped Lopez and arrested him across the street from the department parking lot.

Lopez tossed a loaded gun while he was running, according to police, and that was found and booked into evidence.

The driver of the car, Enrique Ramos, was arrested for violating his parole terms.
