Officer fires shot at man after Salinas armed robbery, pursuit
SALINAS, Calif. (KION)
UPDATE 11/22/2019 4:20 p.m. A Salinas officer fired a shot at a man after an armed robbery and police chase, according to the Monterey County District Attorney's Office.
The armed robbery happened near Old Natividad Road and Natividad Road at around 1:20 a.m. Tuesday. Investigators said one of the suspects assaulted the victim with a semi-automatic handgun before leaving.
Officers shared the description of the suspects and the gun used, and just before 2 a.m., officers saw the potential suspects and a chase started. One of the suspects, Joesiah Martinez, got out of the vehicle and was arrested without injury. He is charged in connection to the robbery.
The driver of the vehicle, 29-year-old Christopher Carrillo, continued the chase, according to police. It ended near Industrial Street and Sanborn Place, and there police said Carrillo got out of the vehicle and ran.
Officers chased Carrillo, and that is when police said Sergeant Cameron Murphy, a 16-year-veteran, saw Carrillo reach for what he thought was a gun. Murphy and other officers said they ordered Carrillo to stop and drop the gun multiple times, but eventually Murphy fired one shot at Carrillo, who was not hit.
Investigators said Carrillo was found hiding in a homeless camp by a Monterey County Sheriff's K9 and was arrested. They did not find a gun.
Carrillo said during an interview that he was not hit by the gunfire and was not injured during the chase, but said he had an old injury that started to bleed.
The Monterey County District Attorney's Office is still investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call the DA's Office at 831-755-5070.
