Santa Cruz police arrest woman suspected of starting five garbage can fires

Santa Cruz police arrested a woman Friday who they believe started fires in five garbage cans throughout the morning.

Officers said they responded to five small fires between 12:55 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. on Ocean Street and Church Street in garbage cans.

While officers were investigating, a witness said they saw a woman, later identified as 34-year-old Nataliya Zubrilina, setting a fire near Church Street and Commerce Lane.

Officers found Zubrilina and said they identified her as the person lighting the fire. They said she admitted to setting the other fires.

Zubrilina was booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail on suspicion of arson and for an outstanding warrant.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 831-420-5820.
