Marina police announce passing of retired police K-9

Marina police say one of their retired police K-9s, Sammy, passed away on Tuesday.

They say Sammy died peacefully surrounded by his partner and owners. He was a 13 and a half-year-old Belgian Malinois that came from Europe to the United States in 2006. He joined the Marina Police Department in 2007. His handler was Sgt. Steve Russo.

Sammy was trained in apprehension, defense, tracking suspects, narcotics and SWAT operations. For seven years he served with Russo and competed against other canines in state-wide competitions. He received multiple awards for his abilities.

In addition to taking a bite out of crime, Sammy participated in community events. During his retirement he visited local Marina schools, and most recently met with students at Spreckels Elementary School.

Sammy retired in October of 2014 and went to live with Russo and his family. The Police Department says during that time he enjoyed long walks, car rides, sunbathing in the backyard, belly rubs and playing fetch. They say his demand for love and affection along with his tough dog attitude will remain in their hearts.
