Pedestrian killed by suspected DUI driver on Highway 9

A suspected drunk driver struck and killed a pedestrian in the Santa Cruz mountains early Friday morning.

The California Highway Patrol said 24-year-old Taralyn McKay of Boulder Creek was in a 1995 tan Buick LeSabre going northbound on Highway 9, south of Bear Creek Road when she struck the 29-year-old pedestrian.

The accident happened around 2:20 a.m. Friday.

“Statements gathered at the scene revealed the pedestrian was possibly walking in the roadway, and was subsequently struck by the Buick,” said CHP.

The victim was found unconscious on the roadway. He was taken to a trauma center in Santa Clara where he died.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation.

CHP determined McKay had been under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and arrested her at the scene.
