Downed power lines spark vegetation fire near Highway 17

A vegetation fire was sparked by live downed power lines in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

According to Cal Fire, crews responded to the area of Hutchingson and Old Logging Road near Summit Road and Highway 17 around 11:45 a.m. Thursday.

Cal Fire is calling this the “Old Fire.” Forward spread of the fire was stopped at 1 acre. No structures were threatened.

During the preliminary investigation, it’s believed the fire was started by live downed power lines. Cal Fire officials said it’s not clear what caused the power lines to fall.

Air support and additional ground resources were released around 12 p.m.

Drivers are advised to stay clear of the area while PG & E crews work to repair the power lines.
