Two people drowned at reservoir in Soledad

UPDATE 5/16/16 2:30 PM: Investigators identified the two men who drowned at a Soledad reservoir as Javier De Leon and his cousin Emmanuel De Leon.

Investigators said they were training their horses off of Camphora Gloria Road. They said Emmanuel went into the water with his horse to train the animal not to get scared. The horse bucked him off and Emmanuel started treading water. Javier went in to help, but both drowned.

ORIGINAL STORY: Two people drowned Saturday at a reservoir off Camphora Gloria Road near the Salinas Valley State Prison in Soledad, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department.

Two cousins were in the area horseback riding when one man fell off his horse into the
reservoir. The other man jumped in after him, but after struggling to swim
ashore they both drowned, Sheriffs said.
