UPDATE: Clovis homicide suspect found on Central Coast, in custody

UPDATE: 5/11/16 7:31 PM:

A 49-year old Clovis man, who allegedly killed his estranged wife and her mother in Clovis last week, was arrested Wednesday after a homeless person in Seaside led police to him.

The investigation started on Saturday morning when Dave McCann’s wife and mother in law were found dead at a home in Clovis. Following the discovery, there were reports and tips that McCann was on the run and that he been spotted near Paso Robles.

“The suspect in a murder case from Clovis had been seen in the area of Paso Robles and Cambria,” said Sgt. Manuel Fernandez from the Seaside Police Dept.

Even after being spotted in Paso Robles, police had trouble tracking McCann down until they showed his picture to a seaside homeless person named Peter Thanos.

“They were coming around with the picture of the guy and I knew it,” said Thanos. “I knew for a fact it was the same guy.”

Thanos told KION that he met McCann on Sunday night in the parking lot of the McDonalds on Canyon Del Rey Blvd. Thanos said McCann looked like he needed help, so unaware that McCann was wanted for murder, Thanos offered him a place to stay at his camp which is less than a mile up the road.

“He did say his family was trying to take his money or kick him out of the house or something like that.”

Thanos said he had no idea McCann was a wanted man, but as soon as police showed him his picture…

“I knew right there that it was the man and I said he is sleeping up in my camp,” said Thanos.

That is when Thanos led police right to McCann and police arrested the alleged murderer.

“I don’t think I did anything that anybody else wouldn’t have done, said Thanos. “I mean if you know someone is going to hurt someone else you got to stop them,” said Thanos.

To thank him for his help, Thanos said two detectives from the Clovis Police Department spent their own money on a new bike for him.

McCann is now in Clovis waiting to appear before a judge.
