Crews say faulty outlet leads to large apartment fire in King City

Nearly thirty residents are displaced after an apartment complex fire in King City early Monday morning. Fire crews said the building at 308 Broadway St. caught on fire just after 1 am.

Police said several families were trapped on awnings and had to escape through second story windows. Crews said the fire was put out a few hours later with help from the King City Fire Department, Cal Fire, Salinas Fire Department, South Monterey County Fire Department and the Greenfield Fire Department.

One person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and two more were treated on scene. Crews said their initial investigation shows the fire may have started because of a faulty outlet.

The American Red Cross is assisting 28 residents who were displaced.
