Piece of Marina history comes crashing down with radio towers
Saturday and Sunday marked the end of an era in Marina as two iconic radio towers came crashing down.
AM radio enthusiasts were there with their cameras to capture the three second moment, sharing memories as they gathered.
Saturday the first of the two KIDD towers fell, the second and final on Sunday, taking with it 60 years of history.
Jordan Greenberg has a degree in radio and grew up on the peninsula listening to the station.
“A lot of amazing announcers ame off KIDD and it was just wonderful, a Top 40, local radio station,” said Greenberg, “What we are seeing is history, AM radio is going away.”
KIDD went off the air on December 31, 2014. At that point, the Marina city manager says the owner, Buckley Communications had two options, “Either re-built it, or just tear it down. Once they looked at the re-building cost, and what it would take to do the environmental reports, they decided it was probably best to just tear it down,” said Layne Long.
The plan was to have the tower fall in one piece and land in the middle of a blue tarp, but the tower split on the way down and fell on either side of the target.
Project managers biggest challenge was being cautious of the wetlands surrounding the towers, and say that demolition of the 350 foot tower went smoothly.
