Some flights at Monterey Regional Airport affected by runway improvement project
Some flights into and out of Monterey Regional Airport are being affected by weather and the recent temporary shutdown of the FAA Instrument Landing System. The ILS was shutdown on Sept. 8 for the next two weeks as a scheduled part of the airport’s runway safety area improvements.
Because of weather issues, specifically the fog, some flights could not get into the airport at night, affecting the availability of early morning flights departing Monterey as well. Other flights were delayed, but eventually were able to arrive at the Airport. The localizer is an essential part of the ILS, and the ILS is necessary for an aircraft to be able to land at the airport when weather drops below minimum requirements established by the Federal Aviation Administration.
Passengers on evening flights into the aorport and those on early-morning flights are asked to check with their airlines prior to their flights through Sept. 23. Flights should be back on normal schedule starting Sept. 24.
The majority of the general and commercial flights haven’t been affected.
