Monterey animal rescue group searches for injured Blue Heron

A Monterey-based wildlife rescue group is trying to capture an injured Great Blue Heron last seen in Napa’s American Canyon before it starves to death.

Rebecca Dmytryk, with Wildlife Emergency Services, said they are desperate to establish the bird’s daytime pattern and its nightly roost so they can capture it before it’s too late. The Blue Heron has a string or cord wrapped tightly around its beak.

Dmytryk said the bird doesn’t have long. It was first observed last week trying to eat a dragonfly.

The group is calling on birders or other outdoor enthusiasts who could locate and keep watch of the bird from afar to help identify where it likes to land.

Dmytryk said it’s the only way to capture the bird, as nets are not an option, nor is a net launcher.
