SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION)

After a weekend of large crowds on West Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz, parking lots are shutting down.

The City of Santa Cruz and California State Parks are closing lots at the following locations, effective March 28:

  • Lighthouse Point
  • Steamer Lane
  • Cowell Beach
  • Lighthouse Field
  • Natural Bridges State Park

The city says the crowds last weekend made it "impossible for the public to adhere to the state and county shelter-in-place orders and implement appropriate social distancing practices."

There may also be additional parking restrictions in the area.

The City of Santa Cruz offers many outdoor exercise locations to maintain health and well-being in compliance with social distancing guidelines,” said Parks and Recreation Director Tony Elliot. “Please consider using the rest of our 1,700 acres of parkland across beaches, parks, and open space for walking, jogging and other activities, but not to congregate.”

Santa Cruz County is under a "shelter in place" order due to COVID-19, and California remains under an open-ended "stay at home" order.
