DES MOINES, Iowa (KCCI) — Anticipation filled the air at Pioneer Hall on Friday morning at the Iowa State Fair.
For the last several years, the husband calling contest has drawn a crowd. For many, it was their first time attending the event.
“I just wanted to see what it’s all about,” one fairgoer said. Another added, “We’ve never done it before and it sounded like great fun.”
Participants had been practicing their calls all year. They knew their voices would be loud and clear.
“I’m expecting some loud voices,” a fairgoer said.
This year saw both new faces and familiar favorites in the competition. Calls ranged from the enthusiastic “DOMINICCCCCCCC!” to the playful “Roy… ROOOOOOOYYYYY!” But it was Wendy Bryce, from Onawa, who stole the show with a performance that included tap dancing and a musical number.
“It’s something to laugh at it brings smiles to people’s faces, very joyful, it’s silly, so I hope people, it just brings a smile to their face,” she said.
