Find Your District: Your guide to school reopening plans on the Central Coast

CENTRAL COAST, Calif. (KION) Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito Counties are all on the state monitoring list, meaning schools are required to continue with distance learning until the county is off the monitoring list for 14 days, but every school and district has a different approach.

KION is still reaching out to schools and districts to gather more information about reopening plans, start dates and safety measures.

Monterey County

Alisal Union

The district plans to begin the school year with distance learning. When health officials decide that it is safe, the school plans to gradually begin bringing students back to the classroom. Phase Two would be a hybrid model with only 25% of students in class at one time. Safety measures at that time will include more hand washing and sanitizing, temperature screenings, social distancing, limiting adult access to campus, PPE for students and staff and support provided by school counselors.

All Saints Day School

First day of school- Aug. 18

School officials say the current plan is to start the year with distance learning, but they said they are waiting for clarification from the state and county about applications for exemptions to see if it is something to consider. Officials said the preschool is exempt from the order and will begin in-person on Aug. 18. When the school reopens, officials plan to take advantage of the large campus and small class sizes to make sure everyone can physically distance and potentially use the outdoor space. The school has hired a nurse and is acquiring new technology to help with distance learning.

Anthem Christian School

First day of school- Aug. 17

Anthem school plans to continue distance learning through the start of the school year. Teachers are using Edmodo, Zoom and recorded videos in their lessons. The school office is still open. The school said it will continue with online learning until health orders are lifted.

Big Sur Charter School

Phase 1 of Big Sur Charter School's reopening plan is to offer classes online only. It said it would implement these plans if local, state or federal guidelines and mandates require schools to close. State and local orders in Monterey County require schools to offer distance learning-only. Phase two would involve small, in-person learning classes. Students would not change classes, desks would be spaced apart and the school said it would limit sharing items among other precautions.

Big Sur Unified/Pacific Valley School

Big Sur Unified has applied for a waiver to offer in-person learning. Monterey County and state orders currently require schools to offer distance learning-only.

Bradley Union

First day of school- Aug. 25

Bradley Union officials said it will offer online-only classes if local, state or federal orders require it. State and Monterey County orders require distance learning only. The next step would be to offer small, in-person classes in groups that do not mix. That would happen when orders are modified. Staff members are expected to continue working on campus unless told otherwise, and there will be health screenings before they arrive. The campus is closed to visitors.

Carmel Unified

The Carmel Unified School District listed the Monterey County Office of Educations order requiring online-only learning as its COVID-19 plan. Carmel High School issued a plan for a remote learning model at the start of the school year and plans for an eventual transition to a hybrid model.

Chartwell School

Chartwell School said it would require online learning. Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered schools in counties on the state's monitoring list to continue with distance learning, and Monterey County is on the monitoring list. The next step would be to offer a regular school program with the potential for online learning options, but there would be no special events or athletic events.

Chualar Union

Graves Elementary

The Graves School district said it will require distance learning if local, state or federal orders are implemented. The Monterey County Office of Education issued an order after an announcement from Gov. Newsom requiring schools in counties on the state's monitoring list to continue with distance learning. If mandates change, the district said it will transition to small, in-person classes of 12-13 students. At that point, all students will be screened every day, desks will be spaced 6 feet apart and visitors will be limited.

Greenfield Union

GUSD said it will implement a full distance learning model if it is instructed by the Monterey County Health Department to close schools. The Monterey County Office of Education is requiring all schools to continue with distance learning. When it gets approval, the district plans to move to a hybrid learning model with students remaining 6 feet apart and avoiding sharing objects.

As with other districts around us we are starting with online instructions then moving in other directions pending the state instructions," school officials said in a statement to KION when asked about reopening plans.

Monterey Bay Christian School

Monterey Bay Christian School is offering three tracks to families- a homeschool partnership, independent studies and a hybrid cooperative. The homeschool partnership is for parents to act as the child's teacher using a curriculum provided by the school. The independent studies track is for faculty members to teach all subjects through distance learning. It is only available to students in 3rd grade or higher. The hybrid cooperative is the same as the independent studies track, but students are invited to participate weekly in one day of on-campus instruction, chapel, class projects, face-to-face teacher time and recess. There are optional field trips, team sports and clubs as well

The school said it will offer child care for the children of staff members at a reduced rate when they are required to work from sites. When it is safe, the district said it will move to a hybrid model. Students may have staggered start times and temperature checks.

Parents can drop off and pick up materials at the school on a schedule made by the teacher. Lunch and breakfast will be provided to students, and parents can pick up meals at designated times. The district said it will provide a chromebook and headphones and hotspots as needed.

The school buildings will be closed and all visitors must have an appointment, wear a face covering and go through a health screening station.

Santa Catalina will begin the year with enhanced distance learning for both boarding and day students. School officials tell KION that they were exploring options for allowing PreK-8 students start the school year in-person, but Health Officer Dr. Moreno said schools in counties with a 14-day case rate more than two times the state threshold should not be considered for a waiver to reopen in-person. The school is finalizing plans as they prepare for boarding students to return. They would have the option to have a single room or roommate, and they will be grouped into residential cohorts.

Staff would take temperatures and send home students who show COVID-19 symptoms. Pots will be kept to 10 students or fewer.

Kirby School

Kirby School officials said the school will start the year with distance learning, and that will remain in place until at least Oct. 16. By Oct. 9, officials said they will share whether the school will continue with distance learning for the rest of the semester. When the school transitions to a hybrid model, officials said they will require face coverings, conduct health checks, install Plexiglas barriers, install touch-free faucets, convert drinking fountains to water bottle filling stations, upgrade HVAC filters, use Thermal scanners to detect fevers, provide PPE, stagger desks, sterilize railings and door handles throughout the day and more.

Monte Vista Christian

Monte Vista Christian said all students will be participating in remote learning, but the plans are subject to change based on county or state protocols. When Santa Cruz County is removed from the state's monitoring list, the school said it hopes to reopen for blended learning. While the school is closed, there will be no food service and dorms will be closed. When the school moves to a blended model, officials said students will practice social distancing and wear face coverings. The school will limit class sizes, only offer grab-and-go cafe options, consider home-stay options for boarding and provide mandatory health screenings.

Orchard School

School officials say the start date this year is still to be determined because they are still enrolling new students. The school's last COVID-19 precaution update was issued on March 12.

Pacific Collegiate School

Pacific Collegiate plans to begin the school year with distance learning. The school issued a technology survey to make sure students have the technology they need and said it is monitoring public health conditions to decide when it will be safe to bring students back for in-person learning.

Pacific Elementary

K-6 students will be starting the year with distance learning. There will be live online teaching five days per week, and some families will have the option to use a teacher-directed curriculum or a parent-directed curriculum based on the subject. Both onsite and distance learning options are available for preschool students. Each class will have a maximum of 12 students, and the school said they will meet outside as much as possible.

The school said it is applying for a waiver to offer in-person learning. The school would require social distancing, face coverings and temperature checks. The school said it is prepared to transition to distance learning.

The school said it will follow state and county health and safety guidelines, but also said it will be holding classes on campus 5 days a week. There will be temperature checks, face covering requirements, social distancing requirements, open windows and distance learning alternatives.

Aromas-San Juan Unified

The district shared a letter from the San Benito County Office of Education explaining that the county is on the state's monitoring list, and schools cannot reopen for in-person instruction until it is off the list for 14 days.

The district said it will begin the school year with distance learning only. The superintendent said that if conditions improve, it may consider transitioning to a hybrid model. That would involve students attending school two days a week and continuing with distance learning three days a week. When the students return, the district said it will implement daily temperature checks, hand washing stations, social distancing and required face coverings.
