Beer brewers in uproar over new proposed FDA rule
A proposed federal rule that would make it harder for beer breweries to sell leftover grains as animal feed has brewers’ blood boiling.
Beer makers tell The Santa Rose Press Democrat that the new rules, if adopted, would force them to dump millions of tons of grains into landfills.
At issue is a proposed rule by the Food and Drug Administration imposing new sanitary handling procedures, record keeping and other food safety processes required of livestock and pet-food manufacturers.
Bear Republic brewmaster Rich Norgrove says the rules would be costly and force brewers to dump the grains, instead of the more sustainable practice of feeding them to livestock.
The FDA says the rules stem from a new, broad modernization of the food safety system.
