Coronavirus death toll passes 1,000, more than 100 die Monday

(KION and CNN) As of Monday evening, at least 1,013 people have died worldwide of the Wuhan coronavirus. In China's Hubei province, 103 people died on Monday alone, according to CNN.

Hubei province is the epicenter of the outbreak, and 974 people have died there in total. There were also 2,097 additional confirmed cases reported in the province Monday, bringing the number of confirmed cases worldwide to more than 42,500.

Since the coronavirus outbreak started in December, it has killed more people than the SARS outbreak that killed 774 people between November 2002 and July 2003, but the death rate for coronavirus is at around 2.2% globally, less than 9.6% for SARS.

In the United States, there are 13 confirmed cases of Wuhan coronavirus, and more than half of them are in California. Two of the confirmed cases were reported in San Benito County. So far, there have not been any deaths in the United States, but a 60-year-old American citizen died of the disease Thursday in Beijing, according to the U.S. Embassy there.
