Monterey County Sheriff's Office

ROYAL OAKS, CALIF. (KION-TV)- Monterey County Sheriff Deputies safely negotiated the surrender of a suspect connected to an armed burglary in Royal Oaks.

According to officials, Deputies responded to a residential panic alarm on the 1000 block of San Miguel Canyon Road in Royal Oaks at about 1:30 a.m. Friday.

When Deputies arrived on scene, they saw one person flee through the back of the home and able to escape. A second person, later identified as 23-year-old Eliseo Medina Garcia of Aromas, barricaded himself inside of a loft on the second story of the home. The people living in the home weren't there at the time of the incident.

Garcia broke several screens to the windows of the room he was barricaded in. He then showed himself to Deputies and threatened to shoot himself.

Monterey County Sheriff Deputies were able to deploy a drone to get a sight of Garcia who was refusing to exit the loft. A Deputy with the Drone Unit was able to see Garcia armed with what looked to be a revolver style handgun.

Deputies with the Crisis Negotiation Team were called to try and negotiate with Garcia and attempt to get him to give up. After around 4 hours of negotiations, Deputies were able to get Garcia to safely surrender.

A search of the entire area was conducted, and Deputies were able to find a replica firearm in the room that Garcia barricaded himself in.

Garcia was taken to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation before being booked into the Monterey County Jail for several violations. Including burglary, delay/ obstruct peace officer, and possession of burglary tools.
