School district holds groundbreaking for Alisal Community School

SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV)- UPDATE ON MARCH 28, 2024 AT 5:13 PM- The Alisal Union School District broke ground on a new building at the Alisal Community School.

The new portion of the school will include the administration building, 12 classrooms and a play area.

The main classroom building was built in 1936 and was demolished in June 2023.

District officials said the nearly $17 million project will be funded by Measure M which voters approved in 2016.

Superintendent Jim Koenig said voters were hesitant but they understood the importance of a new classroom building for future generations.

"Once you told them the story and made them understand these buildings are 80 years old, they're not failing apart," Koenig said. "We're keeping them glued together but the kids deserve better and would have changed their minds."

The ceremony included performances from the school's color guard and the district's drum line and cheer team.

District officials said construction is expected to be completed in Spring 2025 and ready for class in the 2025-26 academic year.

Alisal Community School and Fremont Elementary demolition delayed

Update June. 21, 2023, at 11:30 a.m.- The Alisal Union School District announced that due to "complications" the demolition of Fremont Elementary School and Alisal Community School.

Demolition for Fremont will now begin Thursday morning, beginning with the small classrooms in the back. The school district said it could take up to ten days for the demolition to be completed.

Demolition for Alisal Community is now scheduled to begin on June 26. 

Alisal Community School and Fremont Elementary to be demolished in mid-June

Alisal Union School District announced that their two oldest school buildings will be demolished beginning on June 20.

The demolition of the school is phase two of the reconstruction process to update the schools.

The main building of the Alisal Community School was built in 1936. In 1941, Fremont Elementary School was opened.

"After more than 60 years of use, Alisal officials began searching for ways to do major upgrades to the oldest schools. On Nov. 8, 2016, East Salinas voters approved Measure M, a $70-million bond for repairing and updating school infrastructure. It received a 73 percent approval rate," said the school district.

Both projects are expected to be worked on during the 2023 to 2024 school year.
