New solar panel project unveiled above Schilling Place
SALINAS, Calif. (KION) -- A ribbon cutting unveiled the second in a line of solar projects between the County of Monterey and Mynt Systems.
The county of Monterey is continuing its efforts to go green with the launch of its second sustainability program solar project.
County leaders and staff from Mynt Systems said this will lower energy costs for the county.
Two solar systems have been completed at the County's Government building at 1441 Schilling Place and the sheriff's public safety building.
The project is being financed by renting the rooftop space for energy development.
The county projects it will save $92,000 in its first year, with $8.5 million saved in 25 years.
County leaders say this project will help the local economy by bringing in more jobs.
"This has a chain of effects, including establishing a workforce and markets to expand renewable energy projects and other energy efficiency projects throughout the county for our community," Sustainability Program Manager Cora Panturad said.
The county says four more large solar projects are in the planning stages, along with figuring out a framework to de-carbonize more county facilities.
