Drivers reminded to keep eyes on the road for Distracted Driving Awareness Month
CENTRAL COAST, Calif. (KION-TV) -- April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month and local law enforcement officials continue to ask people to pay attention on the roads.
The state says 148 people lost their lives in distracted driving crashes across California in 2022.
According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, a 2024 survey found that nearly 74 percent of Californians say texting or talking on the phone is their biggest concern.
"Put your phone away. Silence your notifications. Put your phone where you can't reach it while driving. Plan ahead, set your GPS and adjust your mirrors before you even start driving. Keep both hands on the steering wheel and both eyes on the road," King City Police Sergeant Anthony Shaw said.
The California Highway Patrol held a one-day maximum enforcement period at the start of the month to help raise awareness.
Sergeant Shaw says another maximum enforcement period is scheduled for sometime before the end of the month.
