Police looking for a man who is accused of stalking an elementary school student in Pacific Grove

PACIFIC GROVE, Calif. (KION-TV)- Pacific Grove Police are looking for a male suspect who allegedly was following an elementary school student on Thursday morning.

A Pacific Grove Police commander said in a media release that the student observed a man following them in the area of Sinex Avenue and Carmel Avenue.

Police said the man followed the student close enough that the student became afraid and ran the rest of the way to Robert Down Elementary School and reported the incident to the school administrators.

Officers said that a school resource officer notified on-duty Pacific Grove Police officers who patrolled the areas around the elementary school.

Investigators said that students at Robert Down Elementary School were not harmed as a result of this incident.

The Pacific Grove Unified School District posted a statement on their social media pages.

"We want to again reassure our community that the safety and well-being of our students and staff are the District’s top priority. While there is no indication at this time that any harm came to our students, we are taking this matter very seriously.

Out of an abundance of caution, we urge all parents and guardians to remind their children about the importance of being vigilant and aware of their surroundings when walking to and from school. Please take this opportunity to reinforce their learned safety protocols (See Something Say Something and Think on Your Feet) with your children, such as walking in groups when possible and never engaging with strangers.

PGPD will provide additional patrol officers throughout the week before and after school. Additionally, we encourage anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in the vicinity of the school today or who has any information regarding this incident to contact the PGPD immediately.

We will continue to work closely with law enforcement to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and school community. Thank you for your cooperation and support in this matter."
