Fresno man arrested on DUI charges after driving off the Monterey Wharf
MONTEREY, Calif. (KION-TV)- Monterey Police said a Fresno man was arrested after he drove his car off the Monterey Wharf while trying to evade police early Sunday morning.
Police said the incident started when officers on foot observed a green 1997 Chevrolet Silverado turn right from Alvarado Street onto Del Monte Avenue around 1:25 a.m.
Investigators said that an officer was able to locate the vehicle on the left turn pocket from Del Monte Avenue to Municipal Wharf 2.
The officer turned on their lights to initiate a traffic stop which the truck stopped.
When the officer got out of the car, the truck fled northbound toward the end of the wharf at a high rate of speed
Monterey Police said that the officer assumed the people inside the vehicle were hiding at the end of the wharf.
Investigators said that when other officers got to the scene they heard a cry for help coming from the ocean.
Officers were able to locate four people in the water and threw flotation devices at them.
Monterey Police realized the driver had driven the car off the wharf.
All four were safely rescued by Monterey Fire and the U.S. Coast Guard. The passengers were treated for minor injuries and were released.
Police identified the driver of the Silverado as 21-year-old Martin Urroz. Urroz sustained multiple injuries from driving his truck into the ocean.
He was transported to Natividad Medical Center and was arrested on multiple charges per Monterey Police.
Investigators said Urroz is booked at the Monterey County Jail on multiple charges including DUI, driving under the influence of alcohol and evading a police officer.
