Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office identifies man killed after being trapped under debris washed up by large wave

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office confirms one person is dead after he was trapped under debris washed up from a large wave.

The Sheriff's Office is now identifying the identity of the victim as 64-year-old David Koons of Watsonville.

California State Parks and firefighters were called out to the scene around 11:30 a.m. on Monday at Sunset State Beach.

Officials say they found the victim trapped and transported him to a local hospital.

The sheriff's office said the man later died of his injuries.
