Joby Aviation receives $9.8 million to expand Marina facility
MARINA, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Joby Aviation has announced they're set to receive a CalCompletes grant from the state to support expanding its Marina facility.
According to Joby, the grant is worth $9.8 million and would support initial training for pilots and aircraft maintainers.
Marina recently lost a bid for a new manufacturing plant to Ohio in September 2023. City staff initially described the project as a new 200,000 square foot building that can double their research, development and production capacity in Marina.
Joby said they're committed to investing $41.3 million and expect 690 additional full-time jobs to be created in the state as a result of receiving the grant by 2027.
"Joby was founded in 2009, today employs more than 1,250 people across the state, and we’re thrilled to be able to keep growing in California as we deliver revolutionary emissions-free flight,” said JoeBen Bevirt, Founder and CEO of Joby.

Operations are expected to begin in 2025 according to a statement from Joby Aviation.
“This grant to Joby for their planned manufacturing expansion in Marina, California affirms California’s commitment to build the future of advanced air mobility through a partnership with government, community, and industry, which I like to describe as the Marina Way," said Senator Anna Caballero. "The Marina Way can be a model for how we solve climate, housing, and transportation challenges."
