Salinas High School student charged with attempted murder after alleged stabbing
SALINAS, CALIF. (KION-TV)- Salinas Union High School District confirmed to our reporter at the scene that Salinas High School was on lockdown after a female student was stabbed by a male student.
Salinas Police said that at least one female student was stabbed in the courtyard. As of 3:23 p.m., our reporter on the scene says students are being let out.
The Salinas Union High School District said that at 1:15 p.m. two students were involved in a fight that resulted in a male student assaulting a female student with a weapon. She was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
The lockdown was lifted after two hours. The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment, said police.
Police said that a 16-year-old female student was stabbed multiple times in her upper torso area. The 17-year-old male student was detained by probation officers.
The weapon was identified by police as a 2-3" pocket knife. The suspect was taken to Juvenile Hall on attempted murder charges.
Our first concern is for the safety and well-being of our students, staff, families, and those who were impacted by this terrible event. Every Salinas Union High School District campus has established a safety plan and lockdown procedures that contribute to maintaining a safe learning environment for our students. In the wake of this incident, school personnel will be reviewing those plans and continuing our ongoing relationship with law enforcement to ensure we do everything we can to maintain the safety and security of our schools.
School counselors, social workers, behavior specialists and administrators are available to support students and parents as needed. Salinas High School staff stand ready to provide resources to help students and staff who need additional resources to process this incident.
This is a time of year where families are celebrating promotion to high school and graduation. This is obviously not the expected behavior and we will work through the investigations with the law enforcement agencies.

An anonymous parent said her 3 kids attend Salinas High School-- as well as other family members. One of her children witnessed the stabbing and it happened during lunch.
Parents were waiting outside of Salinas High to reunite with their children after they were on lockdown.
A parent said her kid witness the stabbing and he then ran and called her to pick him up. That is when she drove to campus feeling very frantic about what had happened.
"My son response to me was when I asked him if he was OK," said an anonymous parent. "He said, 'no, Mom, I'm traumatized.' and that's scary as a parent."
She also said tomorrow is her children's last day of school before they're off for summer break.
"It's finals week and it's causing a lot of stress on our kids." said the anonymous parent.
The anonymous parent said she received an alert from the school that they were on lockdown close to 2 p.m.
She said the alert was a bit too late and the school should've notified parents sooner. Some parents said off-camera they didn't even receive an alert that the school was on lockdown.
