California State Parks planning to conduct prescribed burn at Henry Cowell State Park

FELTON, Calif. (KION-TV)- Fire personnel from the California Department of Parks and Recreation are planning to conduct an 11-acre prescribed burn near the observation platform at Henry Cowell State Park starting on Wednesday.

State parks officials said that if the burn does not take place on Wednesday, then the alternate dates of the burn could be on Thursday and Friday.

The burn is part of a long-term strategy at the State Parks department to reduce the threat of wildfires and maintain rare Bonny Doon manzanita sandhills habitat.

State park officials said that the habitat relies on fire to maintain a healthy ecosystem and regenerate sensitive species.

Drivers in the area and campers in the park should see smoke in the air during this three day period.
