King City Councilwoman Darlene Acosta has passed away
KING CITY, Calif., (KION-TV): UPDATE ON FEB. 15, 2023 AT 3:54 PM: King City officials announced that District 1 Councilmember Darlene Acosta has passed away after a short illness on Tuesday night.
Acosta had served on the City Council since 2014. On Feb. 6, Acosta announced she was resigning from the City Council due to health reasons. Her resignation was set to take place on Tuesday night.
She was recently reelected to her third term. City officials said that Acosta served on 4 Cities 4 Peace, the Comprehensive Plan to End Youth Violence Community Task Force and other local panels.
Acosta served on the Greenfield City Council from 1989 through 1994 prior to moving to King City.
King City Mayor Mike LeBarre presented a Proclamation in appreciation of her service and he expressed his condolnces to Acosta's family.
“Darlene Acosta was a cherished member of our community, LeBarre said. "She touched the lives of so many in King City and South Monterey County, she will be greatly missed."
On Tuesday night, King City Council has decided to fill Acosta's seat by appointment. City officials told KION that the application process has been open. The city will release more information about the application process within the next week.
Anybody who is a King City resident and who is over 18 are eligible to apply. Applications are due on March 14 and the city is expected to name her replacement by April 15.
Darlene Acosta resigns from King City Council due to health reasons
On Monday morning, King City District 1 Council Member Darlene Acosta has submitted a letter of resignation from the City Council due to health reasons.
The city said that Acosta will remain at her position until Feb. 14. In a statement, Acosta said that it was one of her greatest honors to serve in the City Council.
“I have considered it an extreme privilege to serve our community as a member of our City Council," Acosta said. "I would like to express my deepest appreciation to all the Council, City staff and constituents for your support, friendship, professionalism, and great work to make King City a better place for everyone."
King City Mayor Mike LeBarre said that Acosta will be difficult to replace on the City Council.
"Councilwoman Acosta has been an amazing advocate for our community, her perspective and straight forward discussions have helped shape policies that have greatly benefited our community," LeBarre said.
Acosta has served on the City Council since 2014 and was recently reelected to her third term last November.
The city said that they will begin discussions on how to fill Acosta's seat during the City Council meeting on Feb. 14.
