Volunteers hung ribbons around Salinas in support of police dept.
SALINAS, Calif (KION-TV)--People gathered at the Salinas Police Department to hang ribbons in support of the department and to remember Officer Alvarado.
Christy Karpenko, the owner of Yard Peepz and organizer of night’s event, said she got the idea when she heard Mayor Kimbley Craig talk about how the police department needed support.
“I wanted to make sure that there was something that we could do in the community that would be important right now,” said Karpenko. “But that would also be around weeks from now when all the attention had faded.”
Karpenko said when the officers and their families see the ribbons, she wanted them to know the community supports them.
Karpenko and her daughter also hung blue and yellow ribbons in front of Salinas City Hall during a prayer vigil earlier this week.
Karpenko also told KION she hopes this will help the community grieve together.
People who want to hang ribbons, but could not attend ’s event can still do so. People can buy their own blue and yellow ribbons and hang them around their homes.
