SALINAS, Calif. (KION)

UPDATE 8/19/2020 4:40 p.m. In addition to the Marina Equestrian Center and the SPCA for Monterey County, the California Rodeo Salinas said evacuees can keep their livestock there.

The rodeo said it still has room. Anyone arriving before 5 p.m. can call 831-775-3100. After hours, there will be personnel at the grounds to help evacuees find pens and take down information.

Owners of the livestock are asked to bring feed and water buckets.

PREVIOUS STORY: Susan Neubert and her family were one of the first to evacuate when the Rive Fire threatened their home on Pine Canyon Road.

"There were flames across the canyon. Now, I'm going to get emotional for this part. Everybody is fine, it's just really stressful," said Neubert.

In a matter of minutes Neubert loaded up her dog and four horses. They arrived at the Marina Equestrian Center, Sunday night. "It's been wonderful. Everyone is kindhearted and really nice. I can't tell you how happy my horses are here," said Neubert.

The Marina Equestrian Center has partnered with the Monterey County SPCA to shelter sheltering 45 horses, 10 chickens, 3 emus, 2 donkeys, 2 goats and 1 alpaca.

"They just started coming in by the truckload. All of our members were ushering horses to turn out areas, to pastures, to stalls," said Kyle Soliven with the Marina Equestrian Center.

17 pastures have been made available for animals in need. The center is providing them with food and water.

"We're really just trying to be here for the community, support them in any way we can and be as accommodating as possible," said Soliven.

For Neubert, it's now a waiting game, but she's thankful her horses and family are safe. "We're just taking it one day at a time. We'll make decisions as they come," said Neubert.

The SPCA asks that you take your animals with you when you evacuate, but call 831-264-5455 if you need assistance.
