Santa Cruz County urges tent campers to go indoors amid Red Flag warning
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION) A red flag warning is effect in Santa Cruz County, which means erratic winds are possible.
For people who have packed up and left their homes, the problem now is trying to stay safe, with limited places to go.
“Last night was the 5th night I’ve been staying in my car," says Jeanette who evacuated from Lompico.
Jeanette who lives in Lompoc has been going from church to church the past few days to find a safe place to sleep.
"I was still staying in the parking lot in my car there because I have no family and nowhere go,” says Jeanette.
Today, she's finding some much needed assistance at the Santa Cruz Bible Church. It's become a safe space and temporary community for those evacuating from the fires.
“We’re doing housing with cots, meals, and then we also have some space for people to park their cars, campers, tents in our parking lot," says Scott Newman, a Pastor at Santa Cruz Bible Church.
A new order from the county Sunday is urging tent campers to move indoors as a red flag warning goes into effect.
"With the weather conditions and the uncertainty with that we definitely are encouraging all of our guests to come inside,” says Newman
In the meantime, evacuees are thankful for the help in the community.
"The church is fabulous, the red cross is fabulous what they are doing, says Jeanette.
Officials at Santa Cruz Bible Church say they could merge with Cabrillo College because of their available space. But tonight, they say they are staying put.
