SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The City of Salinas made a statement to residents Wednesday regarding immigration enforcement.

They said that amid immigration status concerns across the country as well as locally, they don't want people living in Salinas to avoid emergency services or other important resources because of deportation fears.

The city says that they will not ask about immigration status, and the police department will not prioritize enforcing federal immigration laws.

"If you are a victim or witness to a crime, we urge you to report it without fear of immigration enforcement," the city said in a statement.

The City of Santa Cruz is encouraging residents to visit cityofsalinas.org/KnowYourRights to stay informed and learn about available resources.
