CASTROVILLE, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Assembly member Dawn Addis met with close to 50 students Friday afternoon.

She was advocating for legislative action for the safety of the community after Moss Landing's Vistra Energy battery storage fire on January 16.

Students drafted letters to Addis and Governor Gavin Newsom calling for increased attention and local safety concerns in the aftermath of the fire.

"One of the things we have to chew on is how we do clean energy," Addis said to the class on Friday afternoon.

According to the Monterey County School District, Addis will introduce students to Assembly Bill 303, the Battery Energy safety and Accountability Act.

"We passed a law to create a more robust emergency planning documents," Addis addressed the class Friday. "We're still looking to update the fire codes, update oversight and to make sure that this kind of emergency doesn't happen again in the future."

Addis will be proposing the bill to the state assembly.

The full interview will be posted to this article shortly.
