Monterey sheriffs crack down on sex offenders ahead of Halloween; Monterey County Sheriff’s Office

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The Monterey County Sheriff's Office announced that they conducted compliance checks for convicted sex offenders and parolees on Saturday at a variety of locations throughout the county ahead of Halloween.

According to deputies, this routine check was a conducted by a grant-funded Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement (SAFE) Team in order to ensure the safety of the community who has habitual sex offenders living among them.

The sheriff's office said that they conducted checks in Carmel, Castroville, Gonzales, Greenfield, King City, Pajaro, Prunedale, Royal Oaks and Salinas. Within these locations, deputies said that they found 12 registered sex offenders or parolees, four of which were arrested and booked into the Monterey Jail for a number of violations, according to the sheriff's office.

  • Charles Bailey of the 33000 block of Gloria Road in Gonzales for parole violation.
  • Mathew Virak of the 2000 block of San Miguel Canyon Road in Prunedale for parole violation.
  • Michael Navarro of the 11500 block of Main Street in Castroville for felon in possession of firearm (unregistered 9mm handgun), possession of a firearm in a vehicle, unlocked firearm in a vehicle, felon in possession of ammunition, possession of controlled substance (counterfeit oxycodone pills and marijuana), possession of controlled substance for sale and possession of controlled substance while armed.
  • Stefan Hudson of the 60 block of Highway 1 in Carmel for parole violation.

"I encourage our community to continue being vigilant and report any suspicious or unusual activities to local law enforcement," said Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto in a statement Monday.

All suspects are being held with no bail.
