Deadly crash off Highway 183 near Cooper Road

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Monterey CHP confirmed Monday that there was a deadly vehicle versus pole crash at approximately 4:28 a.m.

They said that the preliminary investigation showed a solo vehicle accident while traveling on Highway 183 north of Cooper Road. The vehicle, according to police, was a 2005 Honda sedan.

CHP says that for reasons unknown, the vehicle veered off the road and spun out of control, which caused the rear of the vehicle to crash and sheer a PG&E pole. Police say that the pole wires were live and active upon impact, which caught the vehicle on fire.

First responders arrived on scene and had to wait for PG&E to turn off the power lines, according to CHP. They also said that the driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead on scene.

CHP are unsure if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash, and they cannot identify the victim because the driver did not have identification on them.

The driver was the only person in the vehicle and the cause of the crash is still under investigation, according to CHP.
