The CHP’s Thanksgiving Maximum Enforcement Period begins Wednesday evening
CENTRAL COAST, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is beginning its annual Thanksgiving Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP) from 6:01 p.m. Wednesday through 11:59 p.m. Sunday.
“Thanksgiving is a time for togetherness, and our mission is to ensure everyone reaches their destinations safely,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. “We encourage everyone to prepare their vehicles for travel, leave early to account for heavy traffic, buckle up, and never drive impaired.”
In San Benito County, the CHP reported a total of 10 DUI arrests between 6 p.m. on November 22, 2023 and 11:59 p.m. on November 26, 2023.
Statewide, the CHP reported 1,047 driving under the influence (DUI) arrests and 27 deadly crashes within the CHP jurisdiction over last year's Thanksgiving MEP. Of the fatal crashes, the CHP says that five of the 17 total deaths were due to not wearing a seatbelt.
"The CHP urges everyone to play their part in making the holidays safe: buckle up, drive sober, refrain from speeding, and avoid distractions," they wrote on Facebook.
