CENTRAL COAST, Calif. (KION-TV) -- A statewide strike is planned on May 1 with over 20,000 UC healthcare researchers and technical workers in protest against the system's hiring freeze.

According to the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE), the ongoing staffing shortages is harming patient care and research.

They are also demanding that the UC system reverses the freeze and address staffing gaps.

This strike will mark the third in just a few months as workers push for better conditions.
